Before In Vitro Fertilization

Trial embryo transfer and uterine examination. The couple would likely be asked to undergo some screening tests for general fitness.

What to Expect During In Vitro Fertilization?

The IVF treatment cycle goes step-by-step as follows:

  • Treatment to stimulate production and growth of mature eggs- Hormones are utilized to help ovaries produce multiple eggs. There are certain medications that the doctor may use to stimulate the ovaries, help eggs mature, delay ovulation, and prepare the uterine lining for better attachment of fertilized eggs. They are given for 1-2 weeks. Thereafter, a vaginal ultrasound and blood tests are run to find out if there are enough healthy eggs ready for retrieval.
  • Egg retrieval- This procedure involves the collection of eggs from one or both ovaries with the help of transvaginal ultrasound aspiration or else abdominal ultrasound-assisted removal of eggs. It is performed after 34-36 hours of providing the final shot of fertility medicine to the patient and before ovulation. The collected mature eggs are kept in liquid that helps develop them.
  • Sperm retrieval- In this procedure, the semen is collected through ma-sturb-ation and washed in the lab to separate the sperm from seminal fluid. This is done either on the day of egg retrieval or the sperm collection is done ahead of time and frozen for future use. In some cases, the doctor performs testicular aspiration to collect sperm directly from the testicle.
  • Fertilization- Commonly, the methods used to fertilize an egg with sperm are conventional insemination and intracytoplasmic sperm injection. In the former method, a mixture of healthy eggs and sperm are kept in an incubator whereas in the latter method, each mature egg is injected with healthy single sperm.
For some people, assisted hatching and preimplantation genetic testing are recommended before moving to the next step of embryo transfer.
  • Embryo transfer- This is performed after 2 to 6 days of egg retrieval. The procedure involves inserting a catheter through the cervix into the uterus. Through the catheter, the doctor injects a small amount of fluid containing one or more embryos into the uterus. After implantation pregnancy can be achieved in 9-14 days.
  • Frozen embryo transfer (FET)- It involves thawing the cryopreserved embryos and then transferring them into the uterus. This allows more flexible timing and improved implantation process success during assisted reproductive treatments. It is performed when patients have excess embryos from a previous IVF cycle, need time for optimal endometrial preparation, or prefer to delay embryo transfer for personal or medical reasons.

Note:

Risks can be prevented by an IVF fertility specialist. With new protocols for IVF and drugs to avoid ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), the incidence of birth defects is minimized.

Aftercare In Vitro Fertilization

Following embryo transfer, the patient can resume their usual routine but she should still avoid vigorous physical activities and s-exual intercourse for some. Rest, the patient must take precautions, and taking proper care of herself is important as is for any pregnant woman. One must also follow the guidelines shared by Dr. Deepa Rekha Koduru, IVF Doctor in Hyderabad for successful results.
