What happens after fertilisation

An egg that fertilises successfully begins to divide. Over about five days it grows from a single cell into a blastocyst of a hundred cells or more.

Our embryologists watch this happen in the incubator, assess development each day, and identify which embryos are suitable for transfer or freezing. Your doctor passes those updates on to you.

Your journey

What actually happens

No surprises. Here is the shape of it, from the first conversation onwards.

Step one

First consultation

You meet your specialist, who reviews your history and any previous reports. You will have time to describe what you have already tried and to ask what you want to ask.

Step two

Investigations

Blood tests, an ultrasound scan, and a semen analysis where relevant. These are chosen for your situation, not ordered as a fixed panel.

Step three

Your plan, explained

You come back to discuss what the results show and what they mean. Options are set out with their realistic prospects, what each involves, and what each costs.

Step four

Treatment

If you go ahead, the treatment cycle begins — medicines, monitoring scans, and the procedures your plan calls for, with the team available throughout.

Myth vs Fact

Fertility can come with a lot of advice. Here is what the evidence helps us understand.

Myth

Infertility is only a woman’s problem.

Fact

Causes can involve either partner, both partners, or remain unexplained.

Source: WHO
Myth

Fertility treatment always means IVF.

Fact

Medication, surgery and IUI are also options. The cause and individual circumstances guide the choice.

Source: CDC
Myth

‘Just relax’ cures infertility.

Fact

Support can improve wellbeing. Relaxation alone is not a proven cure for infertility.

Common questions

What to expect

The questions we are asked most often.

Your specialist reviews your medical history and any previous reports, examines what you have already tried, and discusses which investigations would actually be useful. You will leave with a clear sense of the next step.

No — and this matters. Many people conceive with ovulation medicines, corrected timing, treatment of an underlying condition such as PCOS or a thyroid problem, or IUI. IVF is recommended when the assessment points to it, not as a default.

Investigations are usually completed within one menstrual cycle. If treatment is recommended, the start date is often timed to your next cycle.

Where there is a male partner, yes, if possible. In a meaningful proportion of couples a male factor contributes, and it is far quicker to assess both partners together than to discover this months later.

Any previous fertility reports, scans, semen analysis results, a list of current medicines, and notes on your cycles. If you have had treatment elsewhere, bring those records too.

When comparing fertility centres, check the treating specialist’s qualifications, which treatment options are available, how the embryology laboratory supports care, what investigations are recommended, and whether costs, visits, benefits and risks are explained clearly (our guide to IVF cost in Kompally lists what a written estimate should cover). Ask whether treatment is chosen after an individual assessment and whether alternatives to IVF are discussed. A consultation can help you understand which questions apply to your situation.
